The Camp-June-July-August 2005

The Bayou City Fencing Academy now in its ninth year offering an Olympic style of fencing and home to National Junior Gold Medalists will again offer 8 sessions (5 days each) of fencing camps designed for beginners to elite fencers. Each session will offer a fabulous fencing experience with lots of fun. Campers will be divided into groups according to their age and skill level and participate in a variety of cross training sports and activities.

The Facility (map)
Camps will take place at the Houston Athletic Fencing Center at 4997 West Bellfort Avenue; located 1-1/2 blocks west of the 610 loop behind the Cabanna Car Wash and the Meyerland Animal Clinic. This facility is 7 minutes south of the Galleria and 7 minutes west of the Astrodome. Our facility of 8000 square feet can accommodate 9 electric strips.

Equipment
All equipment will be provided for our beginning students.

The Coaching Staff
Head Coach: Delfina Perka — Olympian, National Champion, former head coach Masters School in Westchester, New York, mother, and an incredible coach and role model! Kamilla Skladanowksa 4 time Olympian-National Champion Internationally recognized for her superb coaching and her skill in designing curriculum for all ages of athletes. All coaches work under the guidance of our master coaches who have extensive experience working with recreational and competitive fencers. They have designed a camp program that is exciting, and challenging.

All coaches work under the guidance of our head coach and have extensive experience working with children in recreational sports and fencing.

The Sports
While our emphasis is on fencing, all of our campers participated in multiple sports which include: basketball, floor hockey, volleyball, table tennis, soccer, and various floor and ball games. These sports take place at our facility. We also take our campers to the willow pool to swim at least a half-day per session. The Willow pool is located five minutes from our facility off West Bellfort Avenue.

The Fencing Experience

Three Mustketeers Look Out!
6 - 9 year olds — Each session will also be open to our youngest campers. They shall be instructed by our junior elite fencers under the direction of master coach Delfina Perka. Emphasis shall be on having a fun fencing experience while learning fancy footwork and bladework. This unique experience that will center around developing coordination skills will culminate in a mini tournament in which campers will fence with the electronic scoring equipment. Register early for this session as enrollment will be limited!

Before and after camp care is available at an additional fee.

Beginners (Participants with no prior fencing experience)— This group will learn the basics of fencing with an emphasis on developing skills necessary to participate in fencing bouts.

Intermediate Fencers (recreational fencers with some prior experience) — This group of fencers will work with the elite fencers on many of the same skills. Daily training will be geared to helping the fencers strengthen fundamentals and tactical skills.

  • on strip strategies & lessons
Elite Fencers (team members and fencers going to Summer National Championships and those fencers interested in a more rigorous training regimen) — With an emphasis on bouting and competition, this will be an excellent preparation for the upcoming season.
